FAQ's
1) What is a neighbourhood hub store?
Sainsbury’s Neighbourhood Hubs are the food-led extension to the Sainsbury’s food store offer. The vision for our Neighbourhood Hub stores is to be the best “in neighbourhood” one-stop offer, with product choice and local community at heart.
An in-store Click & Collect service would bring together the much-loved brands of Sainsbury’s, Argos, Habitat and Tu Clothing under one roof, enabling customers to collect their online Argos, Habitat and Tu purchases whilst picking up their groceries.
2) How big will the store be?
The proposed Neighbourhood Hub store for Shipston will be 6,759 sq ft, and is designed to serve the surrounding local community.
3) Where is the site?
The store would be situated on the corner of Tilemans Lane and Darlingscote Road, opposite the Shipston Leisure Centre, Shipston High School and Skate Park. The brownfield site is on a key route from Shipston towards the Fosse Way (A429).

4) How many parking spaces will be made available?
The store’s car park would provide approximately 50 parking spaces, including ultra-rapid EV charging bays, as well as disabled and parent & child spaces close to the store entrance. Based upon data for similar sized stores, this level of parking will ensure there would be no parking overspill into the surrounding area.
5) Will there be Argos, Tu Clothing and Habitat included in store?
An in-store Click & Collect service would help to bring together the much-loved brands of Sainsbury’s, Argos, Habitat and Tu Clothing under one roof, enabling customers to collect their Argos purchases whilst picking up their groceries.
6) Is a Petrol Filling Station included in the proposals?
Our proposals for a new Sainsbury’s Hub store in Shipston-on-Stour are focused on delivering a high quality food offer for local residents, which meets the weekly food shopping needs and helps to prevent unnecessary journeys outside of the town. Following engagement with stakeholders and the local community, we have also reviewed the potential for a new Petrol Filling Station on site. However, given the priority of providing a store large enough to undertake a full weekly food shop, and the associated car parking required for customers, there is not at this time sufficient room on site to create a PFS that is viable in its own right.
Sainsbury’s will continue to review the position and should a more appropriate site come forwards, we would be happy to consider this option.
7) How many jobs will be created?
Approximately 40 new full and part time job opportunities will be created in store, across a range of roles and levels. Sainsbury’s commit to employing locally and retaining employment expenditure in the local area.
8) How will the store be energy efficient?
The store would include a number of sustainable elements, to make it truly fit for the future, these include:
- 100% LED lighting;
- 100% renewable electricity and no natural gas;
- Highly thermally efficient building materials;
- All natural refrigerants (Carbon Dioxide, CO2);
- Solar Panels on roofs
- Rainwater harvesting, water saving taps and WCs;
- Advanced refrigerated cabinet shelf-edge technology;
- Electric vehicle fast charging points;
- Encouraging sustainable travel.
9) What happens next?
Sainsbury’s has now submitted a planning application to Stratford-upon-Avon District Council, which has now been validated under planning reference 24/00528/FUL. This is an important step towards delivering the new store for the local community. If you would like to provide your support onto the planning portal, please visit the 'Support' page.
10) Should the application be successful, what are the timescales for the store opening?
We are currently working to the following timescales:
Submit planning application – Early 2024
Application determined – Mid 2024
Work to begin – Late 2024
Store opening – 2025
