The Old Gas Works, Gillingham

Frequently Asked Questions

1.      What is the current status of the scheme?

Design plans for the entire development are actively being worked on by the team, ready to be presented at our information event on January 24th.

Following this event, a planning application will be submitted to Medway Council for consideration.

2.      What are the proposals?

The proposals for the development of a mixed-use site will deliver:

  • Up to 500 residential apartment units.

  • A new 20,000 sq ft supermarket.

  • Up to 140 specialist homes for older residents.

  • 16,000 sq ft of flexible commercial/business space.

  • Reprovision of Segas Sailing Clubhouse on site.

  • A variety of open spaces for public realm and play space throughout the site and public access to the waterfront.

3.      How will proposals improve the environment surrounding Gillingham Marina and the wider town?

The Old Gas Works development will transform a former industrial site into a vibrant community that seamlessly integrates with Gillingham’s urban fabric. The project will open up the currently inaccessible waterfront for the local community, and provide the sailing club with a new, purpose built clubhouse.

Public spaces and landscaped areas will be created, fostering outdoor activities and social interaction. Improved pedestrian and cycle links will enhance connectivity, while sustainability measures, such as energy-efficient buildings, green spaces, and sustainable transport options, will promote environmental benefits. The introduction of new residential units will address local housing needs and create a range of new jobs for local residents.
