Substation Information

What is a substation?

An electrical substation is a collection of equipment which includes transformers, switchgear and buildings. This equipment reduces the voltage of electrical power down to lower voltages that can be used by homes and businesses. The proposed substation for Aylesbury will transform electricity down from 33kV (kilovolts) to 11kV so that it can be used to power homes and businesses.

UK Power Networks has thousands of electricity substations around London, the East and the South East of England. Its substations are protected by fences or located within a building. Since substations contains electrical equipment, they should only be entered by our trained staff. Each substation has a unique number for its location.

Why are they needed?

Substations play an important role in decarbonisation and power supply. This substation will be important to the local area as we move towards a low carbon economy.

It is expected that by 2040, 36 million electric vehicles could occupy UK roads, greatly increasing the current average household demand. The substation will provide additional reliable, electrical power to Aylesbury and the surrounding areas to support this future demand.
